On January 28th, 2012, DFB LA hosted a fantastic event at  Icon Ultra Lounge to fund a science and computer lab that will serve 400 children at the VISPA school and orphanage in Kenya.  This project aligns perfectly with the DFB mission of project specific fundraising - we met our goal of $10,000, so we'll be able to fully fund two important learning labs for these needy kids. 

According to the official website of Major League Baseball, the city of San Pedro de Macoris in the Dominican Republic produces more professional baseball players per capita than any other place on earth.  Yet, many neighborhoods in this city, nicknamed “the Cradle of Shortstops” struggle with extreme poverty.

Do a quick Google search of “social venturing” – the result? More than 6.5 million mentions currently exist for this term that’s all the rage in the world of philanthropy.

But what is social venturing, and how is DFB helping to create new ways of being involved with the nonprofit community?

DFB’s Los Angeles Chapter has selected its next project partner: VISPA, a school and orphanage in Kenya.  VISPA is home to over 40 children, many of whom were orphaned by the AIDS crisis.  The school provides an education to 400 students in the community, helping the next generation to fight disease and poverty.

DFB San Francisco is working on a project with UCSF’s Benioff Children’s Hospital right now to make life in the hospital a bit easier for kids unlucky enough to need to be there.  But, what do music and medicine have to do with each other?
 

DFB Minneapolis has been busy fundraising for their current project to benefit a nonprofit bakery called The Cookie Cart.  They are more than 70% of the way to raising the $10,000 needed to fund a brand new career certification program at this unique organization, and now, if you help them on Crowdrise, you could win a prize!
